As we wrap up the 2018 calendar year, many board members are already planning their continuing education for 2019. (Access our guide to 2019 continuing education here, and read on after.)
Continuing education for board members is more than just a way to ensure you make sound decisions. From onboarding a company’s new board members to staying in compliance and keeping agencies such as the Department of Justice at bay, board member education is critical.
Continuing education is also important given how quickly the landscape can change when it comes to board issues in any given year. For example, in the past year, we saw the #MeToo movement, which originated in Hollywood, make its way to the boardroom as corporations face sexual misconduct cases. We’ve also seen updated guidance in 2018 from the Securities and Exchange Commission on cyber disclosure, which is still a challenge for many companies to navigate.
Happily, there are many resources for board members to analyze relevant issues throughout the year, ranging from the big, in-person retreats to the short online events.
Each year, Woodruff Sawyer compiles a list of the educational events available to board members. In this 2019 edition, you’ll find everything from multiday events to podcasts to customized educational programs. There are even resources specifically for board committees.
We hope to see you at one of these insightful events in 2019. Be sure to contact your Woodruff Sawyer account executive (or me directly) if you are interested in having a customized training session for your board of directors.
